UK Mega Technology Mission 2017 – What’s Next?
TL; DR: UK Mega Tech Partnership has brought startups from UK to Malaysia to pitch and work together for the advancement of business and technology.

Led by the UK Department for International Trade, in collaboration with Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), the Mega Tech Mission 2017 has brought together 42 UK tech company to company to Malaysia to seek and establish partnership with Malaysian company from October 11 to October 13.

What is next for them?

Participation will provide a unique opportunity to meet and network with leading industry players in Malaysia, explore business prospects in Malaysia and UK, drive forward innovation, R&D, talent partnership and funding opportunity, developments and the growth opportunities in Johor and two webinars covering key business opportunities in the technology sector in Malaysia will be delivered in the lead up to the mission.

MDEC Chief Executive Officer Datuk Yasmin Mahmood described the prospects for private sector investment is good as Malaysia’s location in the heart of ASEAN is pragmatic and prudent. She emphasised Malaysia’s business-friendly policies and unwavering focus on enhancing the country’s digital economy are the positive factors will offer UK investors plenty of opportunities to tap into its information and communication technology system.

Catalyst for UK digital tech and innovation

2,700 digital tech founders and community leaders in UK had come together, analysed and suggested six key catalyst to the future of tech economy, which are to skill up for digital business, to include gender diversity in the sector, to increase access to finance, at every stage of growth, to boost digital connectivity, to attract the best and brightest global talent, and to have physical spaces for company formation and growth. The analysis was done in April 2017.

British High Commissioner to Malaysia Vicki Treadell said that the UK and Malaysia have been looking at how to develop its trade and economic relationship with the digital sector and education being among the key sectors of growth. DIT and International Trade and Industry Ministry have drafted a paper, which will be ready by year-end, to set the terms of engagement.

As the biggest partnership mission, the UK Mega Tech Mission is a starting point for budding Malaysia tech-based company to spread their wings to the UK and exchange investment and technology innovation. This is not only an opportunity to catalyse digital economy and business in both countries, but also to prosper digital tech economy, as the world move together with the advancement of technology.
