Transforming Sarawak through Digital Economy
TL;DR – Youth and innovation goes hand-in-hand, but do they walk together to the future?

Youths play a major role in shaping the future of a country and the future is very much reflected of the quality of our youths today. Thus, Forum Belia Tegas (FBT) was once again conducted on 14th October 2017 in Borneo Convention Centre in Kuching. It was the seventh series since it was founded back in 2015. The theme of the forum was “Transforming Sarawak through Digital Economy.” Realising the importance of digital economy, The Right Honourable Datuk Patinggi (DR) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg places great value in Digitisation of the Sarawak economy to generate greater economic growth in the State.

FBT 2017 has been effectively conducted across the major cities in Sarawak to gather input from youths. Some of the interesting activities in all the series are such as talks by invited speakers, chill booth, exhibition and youth activities, performances by local Sarawakian artists, and forum with the Chief Minister or ministers. In FBT 2017, it had featured some young and vibrant speakers such as Johnathan Lee (the Executive Director of MaGIC), Alina Amir (the Co-Founder of Arus Academy), Saran Mutang Tagal (the  Co-founder of DIYKL) and Micheal Teoh (the Co-founder or Director of Thriving Talents).

FBT 2017 was successfully organised by TEGAS in partnership with MaGIC. Since its inception in 2015, 12 000 youths from four divisions have participated in many series of forums. The main purpose of the forum is to encourage creativity and innovation, and also to update the youths on the current information or policies regarding the state’s transformation agenda, especially the digital economy. The main highlight of FBT 2017 was the dialogue session with the The Right Honourable Chief Minister which serves as the platform for the youths to express their thoughts and opinions on issues that are close to their hearts. Some other amazing activities organised in FBT 2017 were such as MaGIC Spark, HackWkndKCH & HackWkndKCH Jr., Rock em’ Right: Dance Battle & Creative Market, and special performances by local indie artists. Other than that, Spark, which is MaGIC’s signature programme, is a movement to equip Malaysian with first world thinking by altering attitudes and mindsets to match the country’s progress towards a developed nation. Its main aim is to inculcate a problem-solving mindset among Malaysians- to view a problem as a longer a problem but rather as an opportunity to find creative solutions and drive innovation collectively. It was a stimulating event of knowledge sharing and inspiring stories by amazing local enterprise heroes.

Malaysia is rich with young talents who aspire to be innovative in the future, and from this powerful platform, they are allowed to express themselves in a fast-moving tech-driven world.
